Greeting from Belgium!
Here in Belgium, all non-essential businesses, including the gemstone trade and all Antwerp diamond bourses, have been closed. Social gatherings (e.g. parties, fairs, weddings, etc.) are forbidden and heavily fined.
Gemstone businesses are facing a decline in sales due to the cancellation of many gift giving events. Deliveries of national and international courier services are significantly less on time.
Yet many wholesalers and goldsmiths continue to work behind closed doors, investing in 3D renderings and online shops, and using Zoom meetings, Facetime, and Social Media to do their business. This digitalization was overdue and will change our trade forever.
The demand of gemstones of the finest qualities has increased. Alexandrite with perfect color change, fine tourmalines, and unheated sapphires and rubies are just a few examples.
For now, the Belgian government plans to gradually revert the lockdown starting 4 May.
Stay safe!
