Germany: Gemstone Market Faces Growing Challenges
ICA Ambassador to Germany
The German colored gemstone market remains subdued, with activity noticeably weaker than a year ago and buyers exercising considerable caution. Demand for emeralds, sapphires, and tourmalines continues, although it is largely concentrated among high-end jewelers seeking exceptional stones for one-of-a-kind creations. The industry, particularly in Idar-Oberstein, also faces several growing challenges, including difficulties attracting young talent into gemstone production and significantly higher energy and travel costs compared to 12 months ago. Perhaps the most pressing concern is Germany’s increasing bureaucracy, which continues to place a substantial burden on businesses, with little indication of meaningful regulatory simplification on the horizon.
