Tanzanite 101 with ICA president Benjamin Hackman
Tanzanite, the blue variety of the mineral zoisite, commands a great deal of attention for its beauty and rarity. Demand for this natural gemstone has been growing in recent years, particularly from China. Here, Hackman talks about the features, value and availability of tanzanite and how is it different from sapphires in an interview at the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem and Pearl Show in March 2014.
The Government of the Republic of Zambia, a 25-percent shareholder in Kagem Mining Limited, received its K10.94 million (about USD 2 million) share of the K41.6 million(about USD 8 million) dividends declared by the emerald mining company.
“This is the first dividend paid by Kagem in its 29 year history and the first such payment to the Government from any gemstone operating in Zambia,” said Minister of Finance Alexander Chikwanda in Lusaka.
No retrospective of any contemporary artist of gems has ever been featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, until now. Through March 9, 2014, the Museum displays more than 400 works by renowned jewelry designer Joel A. Rosenthal, who are better known by his initials JAR. The exhibition is the first retrospective in the United States of his work.
