Green jewelry takes over the red carpet at the Oscars 2011

As always ‘la crème de la crème’ of Hollywood's A-listers made impressive fashion and jewelry statements at the 83rd annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theater in LA, on February 27. The jewelry and fashion styles displayed were invigorating, reassuring and positively colorful. Floor-length gowns and column dresses dominated, while short trains also seemed to be trendy. In terms of color trends, the palette was in dark hues, prominent with reds and plentiful with a shade of nudes. Metallic dresses added notable sparkle. Jewelry was mainly worn in contrast and lent pops of color to the gowns. Following a trend of the last few years, earrings and bracelets were more present than brooches and statement necklaces.

Green, as in emerald, was definitively the strongest color to take the stage on the red carpet this year. Among those featured were gorgeous emerald jewels worn by past and present nominees.

Amy Adams, who opted for Cartier jewels flaunted with her wavy red hairdo, she revived the classic ‘femme fatale’ Hollywood look in Technicolor. The intriguing pieces she chose included a platinum and diamond “secret watch” bracelet with a 30.75-carat carved emerald, worth $1.025 million, a vintage style platinum and diamond necklace with a 33.24-carat carved emerald. The jewelry was outstanding against her navy cap-sleeved, sequined L'Wren Scott column gown.

Oscar winner and presenter, Reese Witherspoon, donned a very polished black and white Giorgio Armani Privé ensemble. She accessorized it with a bold set of Neil Lane emerald and diamond earrings (35 carats) reminiscent of Angelina Jolie’s 2009 Oscar’s coup. The ‘Legally Blonde’ actress completed her 60’s inspired look with a diamond and emerald ring (10 carats) and two stacked diamond and platinum bracelets, all from Neil Lane.

Award-nominee Annette Benning (for her role in ‘The Kids Are Alright’) was truly statuesque in her embellished gunmetal beaded Naeem Khan column gown. The only true color in her outfit was the noteworthy 66-carat emerald briolette and diamond Lorraine Schwartz earrings.

Another very vivid trend seen among stars was multigem jewelry. Celine Dion wore Bulgari jewelry to the ceremony to embellish her Giorgio Armani Prive off-white metallic siren gown. She was one of the few who opted for a statement necklace with a yellow gold necklace featuring diamonds, green spinel and emeralds, and an accompanying yellow gold ring with a single peridot, sapphire and diamond from the recent Mediterranean Eden Collection.

Gwyneth Paltrow paired her Calvin Klein electrum colored (the hue of a natural alloy of gold and silver used in antiquity) sequined column gown with Louis Vuitton earrings, and a brooch, fashionably worn at the belt. Both multicolored pieces, out of the ‘Ame du Voyage’ collection were a blend of cabochon amethysts, fire opals and peridots.

Actress Marisa Tomei arrived in a dark blue Lily et Cie 1950 Charles James Couture gown, accented with buoyant layers of asymmetrical navy tulle. The ensemble was highlighted with a pair of Van Cleef & Arpels sunflower motif multicolor sapphire, emerald and diamond earrings and matching bracelet.

Red and pink hues were also represented. Oscar winning best actress, the glowing Natalie Portman, complimented her off-the-shoulder intense purple Rodarte silk chiffon flowy dress with a set of bold raspberry rubellite tassel earrings by Tiffany & Co.

Pearl jewelry always glows on the red carpet. The Oscars 2011 was no exception. Camilla Alves was adorned with earrings of pearls and diamonds by Lorraine Schwartz to embellish her simple black chiffon Kaufman Franco dress.

Past award-winner and current presenter ‘Dame’ Helen Mirren looked statuesque in a gunmetal satin Vivienne Westwood siren gown. Her neckline was gracefully framed by a 1907 seed pearl and diamond sautoir necklace from Cartier’s Archive Museum collection.

Presenter Cate Blanchett wore a pleated, pale mauve silk chiffon Givenchy Couture gown that featured a unique beaded shoulder and stomach plastron. All highlighted with Van Cleef & Arpels jewels. These included yellow diamond earrings as well as a tassel diamond bracelet.

Hilary Swank. Reviews reported that she regrettably chose not to wear a grand statement necklace; instead she opted for a more romantic look, with a duo of brooches simply pinned in her large bun. Her Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie titanium and diamond brooches and flower diamond rings added the perfect touch of glitter to compliment her outfit.

In conclusion, green seemed to have been the grand winner this year on the Oscar’s red carpet. Green spinel, peridot and emerald were well represented in jewelry, both as center stones or as accent. As seen before, this year’s jewelry was often seen as the only accent of color to contrast or embellish monochrome or nude looks. Multi-gem jewelry was a prominent new trend seen on the red carpet, echoing what is happening in the industry. However vintage and antique inspired jewelry lives on among Oscar A-listers.
