ICA's Gem Mine Tour Tanzania - Program

The following Gem Mine Tour is designed to take full advantage of the favorable weather condition in Tanzania and Kenya in June and July, and the wildlife migration season.

Thursday, June 26, 2003

  • Arrival into Kilamanjaro direct from Amsterdam, and transport to the Serena Mountain Village on Lake Duluti.

Friday, June 27, 2003

  • Trip to the ruby mines at Longido, including the Mundarara Ruby mine.
  • A visit to the Masai diggings.

Saturday, June 28, 2003

  • A tour of the Merelani hills and a visit to the tanzanite mining blocks. Participants may venture down the mining shafts, after signing an indemnity form and producing a doctor's certificate.
  • A visit to mining block C, which is operated by Afgem.
  • Visit local gem dealers.
  • Evening welcome reception by ICA and TAMIDA (Tanzanian Miners and Dealers Association).

Sunday, June 29, 2003

  • Journey to the Manyara region. Participants will enter the Manyara National Park, and with special permission will visit the old emerald diggings of George Pappas and the new diggings that are producing alexandrite and emerald.
  • Overnight at the Serena Manyara Lodge.

Monday, June 30, 2003

  • A visit to the fabulous Ngorongoro Crater, which is the largest inactive volcanic caldera in the world.
  • Overnight at the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge.

Tuesday, July 1, 2003

  • Visit to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, which comprises 14,763 square kilometers of game-filled grasslands, stretching over Tanzania's borders with Kenya.

Wednesday, July 2, 2003

  • Leaving Serengeti, participants will take the short drive to the luxury Kirawira Safari tent camp on the Ngrumeti River.
  • The day will be spent in one of the richest game-viewing spots in Africa.

Thursday, July 3, 2003

  • Flight or drive from Serengeti to Arusha, spending the remainder of the day in Merelani to tour the tanzanite mines not visited previously, as well as the rhodolite mines along the Lelatema Fault and the tsavorite diggings of the Masai in the surrounding countryside.
  • Overnight at the Serena Mountain Village.

Friday, July 4, 2003

  • Day of leisure and business in Arusha.
  • Depart from Kilimanjaro at 21:00 hours for Amsterdam.
