When sporting your red carpet style, choose gemstones to either match the shade of your dress or pop color into a neutral look. If wearing statement earrings, consider an open neck with more color on the hands and wrist. If wearing a WOW necklace, go easy on the ears and lighter on the wrist, but a bold cocktail ring is always a must. Create balance in your look; don’t try to be a poster child for jewelry by over-accessorizing. With the assortment of colors and shades available in a variety of types, there is truly something for every taste and budget with colored gemstone jewelry.

—Trendsetting celebrities out to make a style statement almost always choose color to set themselves apart. Trends gauged at all the important awards ceremonies kicking off 2007—from the 64th Annual Golden Globes in early January to the 79th Annual Academy Awards in late February—reflect a tendency toward colorful frocks and gemmy jewels.

Hollywood’s Red Carpet has become a point of fashion inspiration, a catwalk for the latest in haute couture. Before the winners are announced, all eyes are focused on who’s wearing what. For young starlets, the trend for old Hollywood glamour continues, with an eye for chic over shock. But where many daring divas take chances is in their use of color. Shades of purple and blue have become new black tie wear, with other fresh favorites in high-spirited hues like buttercup and spicy mustard, mint, pistachio and emerald, hot pink, peach and coral, and crimson.

Fashion risk takers ventured beyond white diamonds to adorn in gemstones that either splashed color in an otherwise neutral look or complemented the gown shade. Among the most popular gems on the carpet were blue and fancy sapphire, ruby, emerald, tourmaline, moonstone, and black onyx. Moreover, fancy colored diamonds were favored over white. Although there were a few statement-making necklaces, eye-catching earrings, bold rings, and large cuff or stacked bangle bracelets are in fashion for these formal affairs. ...

... Some of the more memorable gemstone looks this year have been seen on: Globetrotters like Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy) in sapphire earrings and ring by Neil Lane; Edie Falco (The Sopranos) in moonstone earrings and ring by Stephen Russell; Naomi Watts in pink opal drop and tourmaline earrings by David Yurman; and Sarah Paulson (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) in Lorraine Schwartz white jade and yellow diamond earrings.
At other star-studded awards—from the People’s Choice and Grammy’s to the Screen Actor’s Guild—celebrities continued to show their colors like star fans of designer Erica Courtney, including actresses Marcia Gay Harden in rubellite teardrop earrings and swirl stackable ring; and Cloris Leachman in earrings and necklaces set in citrine, peridot, coral, brown tourmaline, and whiskey quartz.

Among the color contenders at the Oscars Cameron Diaz popped vivid green atop her white Valentino in vintage Cartier emerald drop earrings; Kirsten Dunst glinted red into her pale mint cream Chanel with a Bvlgari latticework ruby bracelet, circa 1934; and legendary French film star Catherine Deneuve wore vintage Van Cleef & Arpels ruby jewels against her classic black Gaultier—including a 1929 tassel bracelet, and 1959 bracelet and earrings in the jeweler’s iconic “Mystery” setting.
