Oscar presenter, Demi Moore, chose a neutral-tone Atelier Versace gown. Not only the two-tone frills and cascades were very romantic, but the gown was also a perfect compliment for her coloring. Her chic up-do perfectly showcased her pearl tassel, diamond and sapphire drop earrings from Van Cleef & Arpels. The stunning pair, which came from the recent "Les Jardins" collection, took over 100 hours to create.

Square diamond pave earrings, onyx and diamond bracelets on each wrist (all by Fred Leighton) and a beaded clutch topped her white-hot look.

TV personality and presenter Tina Fey chose a peek-a-boo, one-shouldered black lace gown by Michael Kors. Art deco onyx and diamond earrings, and black jade and diamond ring by Stephen Russell set off her elegant silhouette.
The 82nd Academy Awards ceremony provided memorable moments of elegance. With less ostentation this year, one witnessed original jewelry statements, with plentiful gemstones embellishing outfits in various color ranges. The total look with matching colors seems out now; it is all about creating contrast with touches of color, for instance, an icy white gown with champagne and cognac diamonds accents. Emeralds seemed again very strong this year with spectacular pieces, while sapphire is still a popular classic. Colored diamonds appeared to have gained in popularity in a vast array of colors. Blackened metal, such as platinum or antique silver, also seems to be a very strong trend. It's all about a shift toward color, present in outfits and gemstones, with something for everyone.

Oscar’s 2010: Colored gems and gowns won big at the 82nd Academy Awards ceremony.
82nd Annual Academy Awards 2010
By Delphine Leblanc, GG.

Glitter and shimmer took the stage at the Academy Awards. But color was clearly the award winner this season. This year's 82nd Academy Awards was an occasion to see jewelry and fashion bursting in a glamour extravaganza. The elite of movie stars were dressed and jeweled to the nines. The ceremony, held at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday March 7th, certainly downplayed the pomp in terms of jewelry (a few magnificent necklaces for instance) but certainly not in terms of style. Rich colors and textures were chosen in an optimistic, and yet tasteful approach.
Several trends were seen in terms of color. Unlike the Golden Globes, white was there very strong amongst A-listers. Another very striking trend was confirming this year's Golden Globes ceremony: several stars chose to wear some neutral or nude tones like beige, sheer pink or yellow with a special style award to some dashing golden girls. Several stars opted for more neutral grey. Last but not least, strong colors truly inspired by gemstones blossomed out in a variation of rich blues, red and fuchsia tones. It really seems that this year blue, in strong hues, was the new black!

Jewelry was most often matched with dresses; colored gemstones were widely represented including colored diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires, pearls, turquoise, amethysts, aquamarines and opals. Earrings were again very prominent throughout this ceremony, especially chandelier earrings. Cocktail rings and stackable, large bracelets were also among the "must haves". Some fashion forecasters, who were betting on headpieces such as headbands or other hair ornaments, were right on target. Vintage and antique jewelry was still very strong this year, adding a more personal and tasteful romantic touch to stars' outfits.

Wearing the most spectacular piece of jewelry of the ceremony, Kate Winslet donned a gold and beige satin Atelier Yves Saint Laurent gown with a one-of-a-kind yellow diamond necklace created exclusively for her by Tiffany&Co. The art deco-inspired piece, worth $2.5 million, complimented the star's $975,000 canary diamond drop earrings. She also added a yellow diamond bracelet to her elegant look.

Mo'Nique, award winner for best female supporting role, selected a blue Grecian-inspired Tadashi Shoji ruched dress, to which she added an exotic touch via a white camelia hairpiece. Both her dress and hairstyle were a tribute to Hattie McDaniel, the first African American actress who won an award in 1940, in Gone with the Wind. Mo’Nique’s Chopard jewelry set included drop earrings composed of radiant cut fancy yellow diamonds (17 carats total) and a fancy light yellow radiant cut diamond line bracelet (46 carats).

Going for more colored gemstones with emerald jewelry, Oscar presenter Julianne Moore opted for a stellar white sequined gown by Calvin Klein. She was also wearing diamond bracelets by Bvlgari and a magnificent 15 carat emerald and diamond ring.

Along with Rachel McAdams, Maggie Gyllenhaal was one of the few stars to chose a print fabric. The vivid blue color of her Dries Van Noten satin dress popped on the red carpet, as did her pink lipstick. She opted for antique ivory and enamel drop earrings and a magnificent art deco cabochon emerald, sapphire and diamond bracelet by Fred Leighton to complete her look.

|
Also going antique, Christine Taylor chose jewelry from Stephen Russell's Vintage Collection. Her gold, diamond and emerald necklace hanging from a black velvet ribbon, included a 10.76 carat pear shaped old mine Colombian emerald pendant. Both necklace and earrings were circa 1880.

Sigourney Weaver. Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images North America.
|
Avatar star and Oscar presenter Sigourney Weaver brought color to the stage of the Kodak Theatre in her red one-shouldered Lanvin gown. A black ribbon belt accentuated her waist, while the jeweled shoulder detail added interest. The actress was also wearing diamond drop earrings and two ruby and diamond bracelets, all by Neil Lane.

Miley Cyrus. Photo by Jason Merritt/Getty Images North America.

Teenage idol, Miley Cyrus wore a champagne strapless gown by Jenny Packham. The beading and sequins, as well as the bustier bodice were embellished with dazzling flower-shaped bronzed diamond and ruby earrings and a ruby ring (10 carats) all by Lorraine Schwartz. The red of ruby added a welcomed touch of color.

|
The Precious nominee, Gabourey Sidibe, opted for a brilliant blue Marchesa gown with floral embellishment, and adorned it with sapphire and diamond earrings, sapphire and black diamond bracelets, and a diamond ring (totaling over 180 carats), again by Lorraine Schwartz.

|
Pearls are never out of fashion. It is no wonder some stars were successfully wearing this jewelry classic. Earrings still seem to be the way to make an elegant jewelry statement. Oscar presenter Queen Latifah dazzled the audience in a lilac satin dress with a jewel-encrusted strap and bodice band reflecting the right amount of shimmer. But foremost, she wore stunning pink sapphire and voluptuous drop pearl earrings by Chopard which highlighted both her outfit and her personna.
