Perhaps the evening’s biggest risk taker, next to Jeremy Piven (Entourage) in an ascot, was Sandra Oh. The Grey’s Anatomy co-star layered on funky, colorful necklaces, bracelets and eye-popping rings, which fashion police either loved or hated against her light blue ruffled Vera Wang. Although stylists advise removing one accessory before leaving the house, Oh’s adventurous spirit proves that style is a state of mind!

Style Tips for the Style Conscious

1. Tack clips of your favorite looks from magazines, catalogues and websites to a corkboard on your closet door to consult when creating outfits.

2. One statement jewel can add just the right pop of color to a neutral outfit.

3. Simple garments are ideal for wearing tons of jewelry without seeming overly dressed up.

4. Don’t be afraid to layer necklaces, over anything, it creates a sultrier look…you go Oh!

5. Jewelry like brooches and long chain necklaces work double duty as belt buckles/belts to add a feminine touch to menswear-inspired pieces.

6. Coral and turquoise are no longer relegated to just tropical summer beachwear; they make strong jewelry statements year round.

This year’s fashion flick, “The Devil Wears Prada,” drives home the point that while the right clothes can make the woman, the right accessories get her noticed. And, colored gemstone jewelry is the exclamation point to any fashion statement!

Broad sweeping observations from the carpet hail necklines low and backs bare, with shoulder-duster earrings, wrists-full of bracelets, and big gem cocktail rings on multiple fingers the preferred accessories. Undoubtedly, purple reigned as the leading gown color, with scarlet a close second, and neutral shades of gray, white and flesh tone prevalent with splashes of color accents.

Designers to the stars—including Schwartz, Erica Courtney, Cathy Waterman, and Suzanne Felsen—favor colored stones. Great examples of their designs bedazzled the red carpet, such as comedian Kathy Griffin in green and golden beryl necklace, aquamarine earrings, and apatite ring by Courtney; Waterman fans Sarah Chalke (Scrubs) in coral earrings, ring and cuff bracelet, and Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live) in green tourmaline necklace, ring and earrings; and Felsen followers Sprague Grayden (Jericho) in green beryl and white topaz earrings, Kim Dickens (Deadwood) in rainbow moonstone and diamond strand, and Robin Weigert (Deadwood) in checkerboard cut oval rose quartz ring.

Several decked out ladies were also sporting Gurhan New York, most notably entertainment broadcaster Nancy O’Dell in a low cut gown low enough to show off a vivid rubellite pendant on long diamond platinum chain.

Sporting her own gems this year Stockard Channing (The West Wing) adorned an off-the-shoulder black number in a large turquoise necklace that insiders say she dug out of her jewelry box for the occasion.
